Soon... the promise of no jam tomorrow
THE Castle Lane roadworks that have plagued Bournemouth for five months are on time, on budget and almost at an end, motorists have been promised.
Following a hectic few days in which Castle Lane West has been gridlocked, drivers are being assured the majority of the disruption will be over by Monday, August 4.
After this date, work will continue on footways and verges and there may be some limited lane closures but these are not expected to pose serious problems.
Cllr Robert Lawton, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "It's been a major scheme and we are sorry for the disruption and the inconvenience that it's caused people but there is light at the end of the tunnel now.
"We're confident it will result in a major improvement which should benefit the people in that area and the residents of Bournemouth in general.
"We're also really grateful to the War Memorial Homes, who allowed us to put our site compound on land owned by them."
The developers behind Castlepoint and the Mallard Road shopping park contributed £1.3million to the £1.6million scheme, with the council paying the remaining £300,000 from its government grant.
Castle Lane West is one of Bournemouth's busiest roads, with the section in question carrying approximately 36,000 vehicles a day.
The roadworks are aiming to improve traffic flow with a new, dedicated left-turn lane for vehicles accessing the A338 Spur Road sliproad and restricted traffic movements at the Ibbertson Road and Leydene Avenue junctions.
Cycling and public transport facilities will also be improved, along with new pedestrian crossing points.
The construction work has involved approximately 20,000 man hours, during which time around 4,000 tonnes of bituminous materials has been laid on the carriageways.

About time, it has seemed half of Bournmeouth and Poole has been plagued by never ending road works, lets hope Castle lane is soon jam free, if not the council will have a lot of explaining to do after spending so much time and tax payers money on this scheme

I am very impressed. What a pity the excellent managers and contractors are not named, so we can appreciate their outstanding work.

"Soon... the promise of no jam tomorrow"
Very clever and witty! It is nice to have a bit of humour.

Hugh...Have to agree about being on time & budget - well done to the contractors.
Also would like to say that the whole site has been very well run being tidy and well thought out even having to cope with minor vandalism to structures put in place to keep the site safe for pedestrians. I have witnessed the contractors receiving abuse from drivers and I would like to pass my thanks & good wishes to all the people involved in the dangerous and difficult works.
Just such a pity I dont think it will work!!!

Castlepoint has been a total hash up from day one ,why did no-one forsee that the road improvements would be essential ,why was no exit put in at the rear to take traffic out through Chesildene Avenue or into Woodbury Avenue higher up by the church ? instead they give us narrow roads with two roundabouts with Traffic lights !!! (a roundabout by design is a regulatory device so why install an expensive traffic light system to mess it up ) LUNACY !!!,then build on the old bus station site and further add to the problem by preventing the traffic from that site going out via Mallard road, instead it all has to exit onto castle lane ...what idiot designed it .the whole area is a monstrosity.in no other country would the flawed car park at castlepoint be allowed to stand ... its an outrage,if any part of it ever collapses and kills or injures someone the compensation will run into millions ,it is a blatant case of negligence, but it has been kept open so as not to upset the store owners to whom someone is going to be paying a great deal of compensation for lost business etc whilst the close, demolish and reconstruct it.nothing will be done though until the people responsible for it in the first place have been moved or retired out of harms way ,they sure as hell know how to wriggle out of things when they need to.

They will only move on somewhere else and make more useless roadworks, I can't see the works at castleoint helping, the whole place should be knocked down.
Barrack Road is another show of useless roadworks, took months and hardly any difference!

Forgetting about the roadworks for now, why on earth is the road system inside Castlepoint so complicated? Surely it should have been just one way in and just one way out - and then no need for queuing up at all the various roundabouts!

Castle point was built very quickly, with very little thought and poor construction.
Having seen a car park collaspe in Wolverhampton I would not go there.
The best way to sort out the area's traffic problem is to close the whole site down on Health and Safety grounds.
They could then rebuild the carpark and the entrances and exits properly.
Who cares if the retailers lose money!

Talking of jams. Who the hell dug up a 6 feet section of the road outside Highcliffe and left TTLs in place so queues formed at 3.30 PM today (Friday) just in time for a rush of holiday makers over the weekend. I noted there were no signs saying who was digging there but there was no one working there. Obviously had an early finish on Friday to let the poor bl**dy motorist suffer yet again.
