THOUSANDS of people lined the streets of Ringwood on Sunday for the Magna Mazda British Pedal Car Grand Prix.

Spectators stood in rows six deep, cheering wildly and craning their necks for a view of the 36 cars taking part in the Echo-backed race.

Celebrities joined local teams as race organisers maximised publicity for the event and raised over £13,000 for good causes, Tenovus and the Oakhaven Trust.

Rory McGrath and Paddy McGuiness took part for a new TV series on quintessentially English sports.

Rory said: "I do a bit of cycling, so this is the one event in the series for which I have inadvertently trained."

Wave 105's Andy Jackson led a team from the radio station, including breakfast show host, Steve Power.

Great Central Racing, a team of practiced pedal car racers from Bristol and Rugby, won the race.

A thrilling, head-to-head battle saw them pip Radioactive Racing, a team of students from the Warwickshire town.

The junior crown went to the Crazy Frog team for the fourth consecutive time. The 15-year-olds completed only eight laps less than the winners.

Squeals on Wheels were the winning women, with team leader, Stephanie Mills, leading her ladies to victory in a race organised by her dad, race director Cliff Polton.

The engineer said the race had been the best ever.

The Danny Cracknell Memorial Trophy for Sporting Endeavour was won by the Gone Karting Mad team, who raced in honour of their late colleague, Regan Wilson.

The Echo-backed Royce team finished eighth.
