| READY FOR THE SHOW: Greg Rowlinson |
THE thundering hooves of Shetland ponies and the amazing sight of geese flying in formation will be among highlights of the three-day New Forest Show at Brockenhurst from July 29.
But the news likely to delight motorists who've often had to resign themselves to traffic congestion in previous years is the fact that a new "environmentally friendly" access road is one of this year's attractions!
Show chief executive Richard Cuzens unveiled a new access road to the five top car parks, which he is hoping will dramatically improve the flow of traffic should the weather take a turn for the worse like last year.
With 165 cars parked per acre when the show is in full swing, the new two-lane road, which leads straight off the A337, is set to relieve the traffic problems experienced by visitors and show volunteers in previous years.
Mr Cuzens said: "As part of our plans to keep the show moving forward, this access road will hopefully prove itself from day one.
"It will be an environmentally friendly stone road this year, set to be finished on Friday, just in time for the show."
He added: "We are hoping this year's event will be better than ever. There is so much going on that we can safely say there is something for everyone to enjoy."
Much has changed since the show started in 1921 and by bringing together traditional country pursuits, new exhibitions and entertainment, the show ensures it is the highlight of the South's social calendar and is widely recognised as one of the best agricultural and equestrian shows in the country.

From Tuesday, July 29, to Thursday, July 31, visitors to the New Park showground in Brockenhurst will be able to see diminutive ponies competing for a prize in the Shetland Pony Grand National and nearly 150 other equestrian events, ranging from majestic heavy horses to fearless show jumpers.
Frenchman Christian Moullec will be making a welcome return, flying his microlight plane to lead a flock of wild geese and cranes in formation over the showground.
Flower and horticultural displays will be set alongside refreshment tents and for adventurous children there will be a climbing wall and a chance for football fans to be coached in the David Beckham Academy.
Lumberjack Sports will offer brains and brawn as participants compete against each other to fell trees and saw through logs and an array of vintage cars, tractors and motorcycles will also be on display.
Other highlights include the Forest Fun Factory arena for children, the countryside area, traditional livestock, tasty treats, live music and much more.
Tickets are available at the gate or can be bought in advance on 01590 622409 or through the website link below.

Mostly the access roads would be fine if idiots as it was last year were redirecting traffic in one file instead of using the other routes also.
I also believe that the New Forest Show organisors need to rethink on the thoroughfare through the show. Last year with torrential rain, the whole show became a quagmire with mud up to ones knees. The sawdust and bark just got trod into the existing mud and was no use at all. Many left the show earlier than normal.
Lets hope the weather is kinder, but in this day of so called climate change, the NFS people need to think of a more hard standing for footpaths and road ways throughout the show site.
