Opposition to plan for Greenridge site

UPTON'S town council has voiced resounding opposition down to plans to build a care home on the controversial Greenridge pub site.

Brewery Hall and Woodhouse submitted proposals to build a 66-bed home, with ground-floor retail space, to Purbeck District Council last month.

But the town council is recommending refusal for the scheme because it feels: l The plans are out of keeping with the surrounding area.

l The development would not enhance the centre of Upton and does not acknowledge the town plan.

l The busy Upton crossroads is the wrong place for a care home.

They also believe the application should be considered as part of a "cohesive strategy for the centre of Upton rather than in isolation".

However, although the town council has rejected the plans, the ultimate decision lies with Purbeck council which will give its verdict on the plans in September.

The central Upton site has been the subject of heated local debate since Hall and Woodhouse closed the Greenridge in April.

David Woodhouse, from the brewery, said the development would bring "positive benefit to the Upton community" and the retail units could create more than 50 new jobs.

He said: "I am clearly disappointed that some people have openly criticised us without understanding the real issues and giving us the credit for coming forward with a scheme that will bring benefit and jobs to the area."

He added there would be strong demand for retirement facilities in the area over the next decade.

Hall and Woodhouse will shortly be issuing a questionnaire to all Upton households to determine what people want to see.

Get rid of this eyesore and let Hall and Woodhouse build something for the future. Obviously the people who are opposing this live in the prehistoric age and dont believe in planning for the future.

There are already three care homes in Upton.

We don't need a fourth. We don't need any more estate agents either! The lack of facilities in a town of something like 7,000 people is astounding. To have three estate agents but no pub and nowhere you can get a sit down meal is ludicrous.

Purbeck council are charging people £1,000 per bedroom if they want to have an extension. They say that this is because of all the traffic - but the lack of facilities in Upton forces people to into their cars and onto the roads.

I welcome Hall and Woodhouse's questionnaire - however it is long overdue. They should have sought to engage with the community a long time ago - before the pub was closed down before they vandalised the building (which was far from an eyesore, just in need of a little TLC) by removing the roof.

If they had worked with community groups, looked at the town plan and produced a proposal that actually benefited the town rather than took away a facility and replaced it with a ugly box that offered nothing to anybody then they wouldn't be getting openly criticised in this deserved manner.

There are actually 4 estate agents in Upton and 3 hairdressers, but nowhere to sit and eat or enjoy a drink. If Hall and Woodhouse had looked at the town plan (which was compiled from views from Upton residents) they would have noticed the top 2 most important things to people in Upton was to retain the Greenridge building as an iconic building, and to have a pub. We don't need another care home!! We need a pub.
