Council workers recently found a conservatory illegally dumped in Wareham. Now, as Swanage recycling centre faces the threat of closure, the authority is warning people of their responsibilities.
The recycling centre in Panorama Road is set to close in 2009 as part of plans to return the the area to nature.

Dorset County Council says it is working with the district and town councils to find a solution, which could include a new centre.
But the biggest worry is that if the facility closes and a new site does not happen, fly-tipping could increase as Swanage residents decide not to travel to the nearest centre in Wareham, a 20-mile round trip.
Cllr Gary Suttle, leader of the district council, said: "Fly-tipping is of particular concern to the council at the moment.
"If the Swanage Household Recycling Centre were to close, many residents may not be able to take their waste to the nearest alternative site in Wareham.
"The lack of a household recycling centre in Swanage would not be good for our local environment - much of the waste may be green but the proposal certainly is not."
The council says that 77 per cent of fly tipping comes from domestic premises and increases at this time of year because there is more garden waste.
Since 2005, householders have been responsible for making sure that their rubbish is disposed of legally, or passed on to authorised carriers.
That means that if a householder passes rubbish on to a "cowboy" operator, they are still responsible for what happens to the waste, with fines of up to £5,000.
Purbeck council says much illegal dumping is down to the cowboys.
To check whether an operator is legal, ask for their waste carrier number. If they can't provide one, decline their offer.
If they provide a number, check it is valid by calling the Environment Agency on 0870 850 6506 or check online at environment-agency.gov.uk/ publicregister.
Fly-tipping can also be reported to the council on 01929 557279.

Fly-tipping is a major headache certainly. Unfortunately, with so many of our councils charging such high asking prices; to take away large unwanted items (a conservatory for instance), they are merely exacerbating an already bad and completely unacceptable situation!

"PURBECK District Council is warning against "cowboy" waste disposal companies."
how out of touch are they - don't they realise what those who have elected really think about this. do they really think that we will all enjoy a long drive to recycle? wake up.

This stinks….
I understand they are closing the dump because of its location within a World Heritage site, near National Trust land, area of outstanding natural beauty etc.
But surely such a prestigious environment needs a facility for collection and recycling rubbish.
We will have a minimum one hour drive to dump our rubbish, which would take around 3 hours on a sunny bank holiday weekend. All this driving has a significant environmental impact, on already congested roads.
A family of four are allocated two bin bags for a two week period (collections every other week). As a direct consequence of this we drive half a mile to the dump weekly to dispose of rubbish. This is despite composting and recycling everything we can.
Also because of these infrequent collections Swanage smells in the summer days before collection. You can smell the rubbish as you hit the edge of town.
The council reaction to the inconvenience, smell, penny pinching and misplaced priorities is to warn against cowboys (but dont provide a solution). I suggest they warn us incompetent local authorities.
So in conclusion, the council don’t want us to look at a tidy and very well run recycling centre, but they do want us to drive for hours from our stinking town to another to dispose of some hedge trimmings.
I am sure many law abiding residents of Swanage will be fly tipping, I suggest they dump there waste in the gardens of our councillors. The residents may be fly tipping, but it will be the councillors who have taken away a critical facility who would be the cause of the tipping.

Why can't we go back to taking all our rubbish to the council tip. Is the reason why so many tips refuse some large waste because they cannot resell it. If you go to a skip nowadays its like being at a car boot sale. Poeple checking what you are throwing away as you open the boot. Then paying council employees cash to take some items away. If you want to get rid of fly tipping allow people to dump all there waste.

Guess what? They're going to fill in all the quarries around Purbeck and Weymouth next!

Don't readers understand? - it's Dorset County Council who want to move/close the recycling centre not Purbeck District Council!
[bold]So hopefully Purbeck District council are also supporting people in the Swanage area to keep the tip open! Ive heard all sorts of roumours from PDC councillors and others about the tip. How about a true report in the local paper from either DCC or PDC. Communicate with your public, you say you act on behalf of us all. Could you please let us know what is going on!!![/bold]

They are both local government! One is destroying an Area of Natural Beauty by building an industrial estate at a time of recession with tax payers money and the other is being downright stupid in closing a well used and loved facility and causing even more tax payers money to be wasted in trying to find an alternative. Come on they are both barking mad.
