DAVEY ON SONG
INSPIRED: Davey Watt
INSPIRED: Davey Watt

DAVEY Watt fired in a scintillating 11 points as rampant Pirates powered to a stunning 59-33 home success over Ipswich in the Elite League semi-finals last night.

Then, with Poole Castle Cover chasing a league and cup double, on-song Watt said: "This is just like 2003 when we did the treble.

"The atmosphere in the team and among our crowd is incredible, just like it was then.

"Meeting Lakeside over two legs this time in the title play-off final is going to be a huge occasion, and I could feel the atmosphere already building up towards it tonight."

Lakeside hammered Swindon 56-33 at home in the other semi to set up mouth-watering home and away clashes against Pirates.

Hammers host Poole next Monday with the return at Wimborne Road on October 13.

Watt said: "They are going to be two great meetings, two tough ones with the final outcome going down to the last few heats, maybe even to the final race.

"But they are the big events we all race speedway for and we all want to be involved in.

"I can hardly wait for the final, and we're under no illusions about the fact they will be extremely tough.

"We're not worried about it either. We'll just go there and do our own thing and I'm sure we will be fine."

Looking back on Poole's easy romp over Ipswich, Watt added: "The key to our win was confidence and the determination not to let our whole season fall apart.

"Everyone knew tonight was just as crucial as a final. One mistake would have cancelled out all the hard work we've put in to finish on top of the table.

"We knew we wouldn't have had a chance to redeem ourselves if we lost so we hit Ipswich hard early and everyone rode brilliantly.

"I expected Ipswich to be a bit harder to beat than they were, but Swiderski had a very off night.

"He's been such a key man for them this year so him having a bad one brought the whole team down.

"They were also with Tobias Kroner and Jarek Hampel but you can't take anything away from our riders. It was a great team performance.

"I think a few of our boys actually backed off a bit towards the end and relaxed knowing we had won the meeting quite comfortably earlier on.

"We'll be looking to do the same in the final."
