Free Kitten - Inherit **

Meet Free Kitten. Fronted by Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Pussy Galore's Julie Cafritz, they usually like to get together every few years and scratch out whatever it is that brings them together. Previously they've tackled Serge Gainsbourg, interminable shoegazing punk rock, avant-rock noise and leftfield pop. Sometimes it works and is mighty fine; other times it doesn't and is far from it.

This time out they've roped in Pavement's Mark Ibold and Dinosaur Jr's J Mascis and flit between lengthy sonic journeys to places unknown and far away or sharp-eyed punk-spurts.

It's art-rock and power pop all too often at the same time. Gordon's woozy ramblings have their moments of merit but you can't give up to them with Cafritz waiting in the wings to shake you down.
