The Subways - All or Nothing (Infectious) ***

HAVING survived their slightly schizo first outing, The Subways decamped to LA in the company of Nirvana/Smashing Pumpkins producer Butch Vig. And it sounds like they had a ball.

Where some pointed to more homegrown influences on their 2005 debut, Young For Eternity, their live shows suggested something far meatier was at work. Not for them the suburban angst of The Jam or the kitchen sink romance of The Smiths, the sheer venom with which Billy Lunn and Charlotte Cooper launched themselves at the crowds channelled the spirits of Cobain 'n' Courtney.

All or Nothing is a fine enough title for while the opening salvo of Girls & Boys, Kalifornia and Alright suggest straw-coloured hair and wheelchairs; the acoustic doodles of the title track lack the same fizz.
