Leon Jean Marie - Bent Out of Shape (Universal Island)

AFTER nailing his flag to the Wonky Pop mast, LJM proves to have much more about him than hastily contrived scene-making.

Edging on Gnarls Barkley territory with its retro stylings and generally up beats that manage to suggest both world weariness and utter joy, there's a really tasty pop sheen about all this. Tracks like Fair, Gotta Have It and You Must Know manage to echo Damon Gough as readily as Beck, The Beatles, Prince, Mike Skinner, Kylie and The Specials - while Bring It On somehow retools Fleetwood Mac's Abracadabra and gets away with it.

East End Blues may suggest there's a dodgy R&B remix in the air, but with producers like Mark Ronson and Bloodshy on board the root songs are well shone and perfectly coiffed. Expect big things.
