Walter Becker - Circus Money (Sonic 360) ***

THIS is Becker's second solo album, 14 years on from 11 Tracks of Whack. Was it worth the wait? Yes and no.

There are some tracks - the hypnotic opener, Door Number Two, and the incredibly catchy Darkling Down, for example - that are as good as anything you'll find on any of the 10 albums that Becker recorded (with Donald Fagen) as Steely Dan.

But there are others that plod a bit, not least Bob Is Not Your Uncle Any More - nice title, shame the song soon runs out of steam.

Becker's a big fan of Jamaican music, and the white reggae on here is a tad OTT at times. Overall, though, the sublime just outweighs the so-so.

A must for Dan fans, but doesn't rank alongside Fagen's awesome Nightfly.
