Beck - Modern Guilt (XL Recordings) *****

AFTER taking unfair flak for his last two albums, Guerro and The Information, the pressure is on Beck to deliver. So, with the ubiquitous Danger Mouse at the helm, lucky for him that Modern Guilt is a belter.

At just 33 minutes it's unexpectedly minimalist, at times melancholy, but never less than compelling, it's an album for fans that should win over some new ears as well. The thick magnetic tape sound of Chemtrails' second movement should plug into old Floyd-heads, while the '60s-styled bounce-pop of Gamma Ray has a Gnarls feel; and Cat Power brings considerable presence to bear on Orphans.

Replica offers twisty-turny Radiohead-esque drum 'n' bass beats; whereas Soul of a Man riffs hard - and Beck rarely raises his voice above a mumble.
