The Hold Steady - Stay Positive (Rough Trade) *****

IF, like many, you came to The Hold Steady through 2006's Boys and Girls In America then strap yourself in because the follow up is even more of a dust up.

Packed with honest to goodness raw rock, the thirtysomething generation's great white hopes stick like glue to their influences - first generation Brit-punk, Springsteen, REM - but manage to reinvigorate the concept of a three minute rock n' roll tune by sheer force of personality alone. Stay Positive is a veritable Brian Blessed of an album - too loud to ignore, plenty to say, inexplicably likeable, slightly aggressive and funny.

The lyrics toast St Joe Strummer, question the validity of the band, pick over the merits of drinks, drugs, sex, psychosis and tell weirdly enthralling stories about people you'd love to meet if you were braver.
