Sharleen Spiteri - Melody (Mercury) **

HAVING set herself adrift from the band that made her name you might be forgiven for thinking Ms Spiteri would be looking to establish her own voice, not pick up the pieces of voices that are no longer heard.

In her dreams she readily conjures the spirits of Dusty Springfield, The Shangri-Las, The Supremes and Nancy Sinatra, but on record it sounds like a play for a little Duffy action.

Just as Stop I Don't Love You Anymore is a glossy sub-Motown stab, All The Times I Cried wants to be friends with The Ronettes and Melody makes a play for dirty old Serge Gainsbourg. It's all beautifully produced and the vocals are performed with conviction, but for this to really work you have to be able to lick the tears from its face, not shrug and move on.
