Be Kind Rewind (12) ****

CELEBRATING the cult of pulp movies from Ghostbusters to Rush Hour 2 and Robocop, the joys of Fats Waller's music and the DIY media democracy of YouTube, Michael Gondry's charmingly shambolic comedy is a sweet treat.

Jerry (Jack Black) and Mike (Mos Def) take care of a video store run by the benevolent Mr Fletcher (Danny Glover). When the entire video stock is accidentally wiped, the pair set about making (or sweding) 20-minute versions of movie classics which prove to be an instant hit.

Be Kind Rewind isn't given to the extreme flights of fancy of Gondry's previous output (Science of Sleep, Eternal Sunshine), but it's every bit as gently eccentic.
