Penelope (U) ***

FAIRYTALES are enjoying quite a revival at the moment.

Maybe it's because they offer true escapist appeal when times are perceived to be hard, at the same time as playing solidly to the loyal teenage crowd.

This one, a hybrid of quirky fairytale and romantic comedy with a great cast of well-known names, stars Christina Ricci as Penelope, a wealthy girl with an unfortunate family curse. Her pig's nose and ears are really quite cute, but even so, potential suitors run screaming from her.

A bit like being a normal-sized woman in a celeb-obsessed world, possibly. The whimsical visual style adds to the fairytale quality, and there's plenty of charm as the message of finding your true self is played out.
