Scottish play still thrills us

"IN THUNDER, lightening or in rain?"

No, this opening night of the Scottish play enjoyed fine weather in the timeless tranquillity of the Priory House garden. The minimal set was suitably sombre- castellated grey stone walls, black pennants and grey/black costumes. Exceptions were the bloodied shirts of murderers and the vibrant contrast of red drapery adorning the gown of Lady Macbeth (Beverly Beck).

Her spirited portrayal of the ambitious queen was excellent. The eponymous hero (Ryan Gregg) vacillated credibly between ambition and remorse but sometimes, as in the dagger scene, he did not display the sheer terror of his involvement with the supernatural: maybe Banquo's subdued ghost (David Jackman) did not encourage this.

Apart from some inaudibility most minor parts were competently played - the political arguments curiously akin to present day situations!

King Duncan (Pete Smith) lacked regality but the Weird Sisters cackled merrily over their cauldron (Dawn Hollington outstanding of the three) and Denis Carlton as the Porter indulged in some unexpected audience participation!

Congratulations to the company on another production of this tragedy.
